Francis Joseph I, Gold Token 1867 (1 3/4 Ducats). Coronation of hungarian King in Buda. Goldjeton 1867 (1 3/4 Dukaten). Krönung zum ungarischen König in Ofen. Novák V-XIX-B-5a, Frühwald II. The royal coronation of Franz Joseph I. And Elisabeth of Bavaria was undoubtedly the most important political and social event in Hungarian Buda of the second half of the 19th century. The coronation act symbolically crowned the political agreement between Hungarian nobility and Vienna central government of Hungarian emancipation and constitution of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. This time a progressive novelty was the coronation of queen Elisabeth, who was the first Hungarian queen to be crowned together with the king during the same Holy mass. The main coronation act was held in the Holy Virgin Mary church, the Hungarian crown was placed on the emperor’s head together by Esztergom’s archbishop and Hungarian prime minister. At this occasion a large number of both official and non-official medals and jetons was minted. Despite the fact that Buda and the neighbouring Pest were mostly German-speaking cities, a large majority of medal texts is stated in Hungarian language. Some of the official medals were dedicated solely to notable personalities and today they belong to desired collection rarities.
