I-3 R-7 Obverse III2 11 – 1 doubled above bottom crossbar. 0 doubled on the right inside and faintly doubled at top left and right outside. Second 8 is doubled at bottom left outside of upper loop. Reverse C3a – Same clashed die as VAM 32A reverse with raised designer’s initial M from obverse showing above d in God. This coin that is offered today is in a PCGS graded 1878 P 8tf, extremely rare in any grade VAM 14.2 This coin is the only problem free certified and Leroy Van Allen confirmed “No Feeder finger gouged VAM 14.2″. This coin will come with Leroy’s personally hand written confirmation letter. Make no mistakes this is one of the rarest 8 TF coins, I know of only 1 other and that coin is a lower AU to XF and really detailed. Please read the below progression of the official VAM 14.2 listings. The VAM 14.2 die pair was the last time the reverse die was ever paired up, and can be confirmed by the late die state VAM 14.2b where the reverse die has a large displaced break thought the “O” of OF where the feeder finger gouges are on the VAM 14.2 a and 14.2 b as well. The progression of this die variety is very simple, as to how to determined the differences between what each VAM-14.2 type variety is. The progression is this pre: Leroy Van Allen. VAM 14.2 has No cracks or breaks on both obverse or reverse and will have “No feeder finger gouges thought “OF” on the reverse”. VAM 14.2 a Has NO cracks or breaks on either side and Has Feeder finger gouges thought the “O of OF” on the reverse. VAM 14.2 b Has cracks or breaks on Obverse and reverse the reverse crack starts around the “O of OF” and has feeder finger gouges. This VAM was discovered in 2006 and to this date only 2 AU examples are in the registry both in AU grades. The 1880 year in general has a large number of collectors and a solid base, so many 1880 O Morgan’s have been looked over the last 17 years since its discovery. This is a true R-7 rarity and is far and above the top pop known in the SSDC with the next finest of the 4 registered being an XF-40. This variety has rim die chips missing in the denticles on the Obverse and a partly retained Cud on the Reverse in AMERICA. The dies on this VAM are busted up basically every where!
